The workshop at the Broadway Studio to support Alternative Letchworth - Past and Present turned up even more interesting information about bookbinding than I expected. Chantelle Stephenson's research and work on The Cloisters showed that bookbinding was taught here as early as 1907! More recently, as we know, Letchworth was the home of Douglas Cockerell and Cockerell Marbled Papers before the move to Grantchester and then Barton. It was a special experience using these beautiful papers in such an appropriate location. And, as if to rise to the occasion, the class produced beautiful results. Their speed and ability meant that we could ditch the teaching plan after lunch and everyone was able to add their own creative twist to the traditional finishes.
